Want to live a healthier, happier, better life? The primary care providers (PCP) at OSF Medical Group believe you can. Having a relationship with an OSF PCP means someone is in your corner to guide and encourage you on your health and wellness journey — whether that's getting preventive care to keep you healthy, treatment for those times when you're not feeling well or a referral to a specialist if ever needed.
At every stage of life, it’s important to keep an eye on your health and the health of your family. One of the best ways to do that is by staying up to date on screenings and vaccinations. This can help detect illnesses in their earliest, most curable stages or prevent them altogether.
Men, women and children should be screened or vaccinated for certain illnesses at various ages. And at OSF HealthCare, a primary care provider can answer any questions you have and provide all the guidance you need.
At OSF HealthCare, we’ve been providing high quality health care for over 145 years. We know that each patient is unique, and we’re dedicated to delivering a personalized experience that’s tailored to you. We have the most compassionate care providers around bringing years of industry-leading expertise into each exam room.

Find an OfficeUltimately, the choice is yours as a patient. Because our focus is you and your unique needs, we want to give you options. Both of these care options can and should work together to serve you. Your decision on where to seek care may come down to timing or location, and your primary care team understands that sometimes virtual or in-person urgent care options are the most convenient solution.
In fact, we view our urgent care clinics as an extension of our primary care team. These walk-in options are often located near your primary care office and can provide immediate access to care – without an appointment – for everyday health issues like allergies or minor illnesses and injuries. Through our electronic medical record, your care team will be able to access the notes after your visit and ensure they are integrated with your overall health plan, looking for trends and risk factors.
But sometimes primary care is better suited to meet your needs. Individuals who need help with issues related to long-term conditions like asthma, COPD, congestive heart failure or diabetes should contact their office right away. Your care team is well-equipped to offer expedited treatment options to help you avoid a visit to the emergency department or hospital.
At OSF HealthCare, we offer primary care options for every age so you can select a practice that works best for you and your family. They include:
If you want to have one general PCP for your entire family, consider using a family medicine provider. Family medicine providers train to diagnose and treat a wide variety of common diseases and acute or chronic conditions for all ages and genders.
You might consider an internal medicine provider if you need help with a specific condition or a complex illness. Internal medicine PCPs typically have specialized training in areas like arthritis, hormone imbalances, geriatrics, gastrointestinal issues and more.
Establishing and maintaining a relationship with your primary care team, even when you don't feel sick, is the first step in warding off potential issues before they become a problem. Your PCP is the leader of your care team and plays a key role in keeping you healthy.
Together, you can develop a care plan to prevent health issues down the road and access tools for healthy living, disease prevention and health education. With their help, you'll also be able to compare past and present lab results, identify lifestyle health risks and stay on track with scheduled screenings, like mammograms or colonoscopies.
We recommend scheduling an annual wellness visit, which is typically covered by your insurance provider. Your primary care provider will also offer guidance for timing of regular checkups.
Additional primary care services you may want to take advantage of include:
Physician assistants (PAs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are members of the care team at primary care offices. There are times where you will see them for follow-up or wellness visits.
Rest assured, your primary care team is connected to an internal medicine, family medicine or pediatric doctor who provides guidance for the entire team.
Having PAs and APRNs on your care team allows for more access to convenient appointments, whether it be care for a chronic condition, wellness checkup or urgent need.
