OSF HealthCare Saint Luke Medical Center is proud to announce that two students have successfully completed its culinary program, which is conducted in partnership with Kewanee High School (KHS) Life Skills. The program, designed to provide special needs students with hands-on experience in the kitchen, has seen remarkable progress and achievement from its participants: Judith Velazuez-Gutierrez and Diamond Lockhart.
Diamond and Judith have been integral participants in the KHS Life Skills culinary program since early February. Their dedication and commitment have been evident throughout their time in the kitchen.
Central to the program's success has been the acquisition of ServSafe Food Handler certificates by both students. This certification has not only equipped them with essential knowledge but also opened doors to future opportunities in the culinary field.
Throughout the program, Diamond and Judith have been actively engaged in various kitchen tasks, ranging from food preparation to cleaning and organization. Their responsibilities included cutting up vegetables and fruits, stocking supplies and ensuring the smooth flow of kitchen operations. Witnessing their growth, both in terms of skills development and confidence, has been truly inspiring.
“It's been a great opportunity to partner with the KHS Life Skills classroom to provide students who are interested in culinary arts with some real, hands-on experience in a kitchen, especially in health care,” said Sara Umphfleet, a registered dietitian and Nutrition Services supervisor at OSF Saint Luke. “It was wonderful to see these young people not only feel a sense of responsibility but major sense of accomplishment.”
For OSF Saint Luke, hosting these young adults in its kitchen has been a rewarding experience. By providing them with real-world job skills, the hospital aims to support their transition into the workforce and foster their independence. As the culinary program concludes, OSF Saint Luke extends its heartfelt congratulations to Judith and Diamond on their outstanding achievements.
The KHS Life Skills classroom caters to students with diverse special needs, including multiple disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities and other health impairments. With a focus on functional academic skills, employment skills, daily living skills and community participation, the classroom prepares students for life beyond graduation, up to age 22.
