About Sigma Theta Tao

Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing was founded by six nurses in 1922 at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses. The founders chose the name from the Greek words storge, tharros, and time, meaning love, courage, and honor. In 1985, Sigma became a nonprofit organization and incorporated. Sigma Theta Tau has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and health care partners from Armenia, Australia, and Botswana to Thailand, the United States and Wales.

Sigma members include clinical nurses and administrators, academic nurse educators and researchers, policy makers, entrepreneur's, and other working to fulfill the organization's vision of connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global health care. Sigma Theta Tau is an international community of nurses dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, teaching, learning, and service through the cultivation of communities of practice, education, and research.
